沿琴颈上下移动
沿琴颈向上移动是指，左手沿着指板朝拾音器方向移动；沿琴颈向下移动是指：左手朝弦枕方向移动。这些移动方向之所以被称为“上”和“下”是因为作这种移动时音符会变高或变低。
高音弦和低音弦
同样的道理适用于对每一根弦的描述:高音弦即音较高的弦。虽然它们实际上离地面最近。低音弦即音较低的弦。
弹拨方向
我们已经学会了右手下移(朝地板方向)拨弦的下拨弹法(符号表示)。
当你往相反方向(朝脸部方向)移动匹克而拨弦，这就叫做上拨，以符号表示。
在演奏中，节奏吉他手倾向于使用下拨，因为这样更有力，发声更从容。下拨、上拨交替使用称为交替弹拨，用于弹奏流畅的主旋律部。
